Our clinics cover the following areas: Poole, Parkstone, Bournemouth, Southbourne, Christchurch, Blandford and Weymouth. these clinics are run by an accredited hypnotherapist using a extremely successful powerful proven programme with a very high successes rate. What is a phobia?
A Phobia is: "an external symbolic interpretation, of an internal anxiety" What does that mean???
When an emotional conflict takes place (at an unconscious level) and the psyche cannot cope or deal with it, the psyche has the ability to bottle up the emotions and turn them into a Phobia. Although some Phobias serve an obvious purpose (fear of fire, drowning etc) some seem to make no sense at all! - rest assured though, all Phobias serve a purpose. In therapy, we can find the originating cause (the unconscious conflict) of the Phobia and release it - and when the emotions are released, the phobia disappears. What does the word hypnotherapy mean to you? To most it produces a image of someone going to a hypnotist to be cured of a phobia such as a fear of closed spaces (Claustrophobia), fear of open spaces (Agoraphobia), smoking, nail biting or any one of hundreds of other phobias. Some of you will also have images of the hypnotist helping with emotional problems and correcting behavioral problems. How does he actually help people? He puts you into a trance and hypnotises you out of your problem you may say. Most people who consult me are either doing something they don’t want to do or are not doing something they do want to do. They would normally expect me to hypnotise then out of it or plant an idea in their mind to change their behaviour etc. while they were in hypnosis. We could indeed plant suggestions in their mind to stop smoking or to loose weight for example. We call this suggestion therapy and it is very effective in helping people give up smoking, loose weight, deal with stress and change habit patterns. Do you have any phobias? That’s an irrational fear of something for example heights, water, blood, spiders, mice, small spaces or large spaces. That’s claustrophobia and agoraphobia. Many of us have phobias or irrational fears to some degree. When they start to seriously effect our life it may be time to seek help. If you went to a hypnotherapist to try and get rid of your phobia he may indeed go ahead and plant suggestions in your mind to hypnosis you out of it. So for example, if you were previously afraid of small spaces such as lifts, you may well go away and be able to get into lifts with no problems at all. However, what we have just done is to treat the symptom not the cause, there was a reason you had that phobia and it is still there! So what will happen now is that it will need to find another outlet. So now in stead of being afraid of small places you may find that you are afraid of large spaces what has taken place is symptom substitution we have swapped the persons claustrophobia for agoraphobia. Of course, it is not possible accurately to predict what the new symptom might be. So as you
might have now guessed, the treatments hypnotherapists offer fall into
two main categories Suggestion therapy and analytical therapy. Some
hypnotherapists use suggestion therapy to treat phobias and emotional and
psychological and emotional problems etc. I
(and the association I belong to) believe we can not afford to take risks
of symptom substitute substitution, the phobia is an irrational fear inside a
person but outside their control. We use a special analytical process under
hypnosis to look for he actual cause of the phobia. once we remove the
cause we remove the effect which was your phobia. Common Phobias
The following are some of the more common Phobias that I have been consulted for: Arachnophobia (spiders),
Aviatopophobia (flying), Hydrophobia (water), Acrophobia (heights),
Claustrophobia (enclosed spaces), Agorophobia (open spaces),
Demophobia (crowds), Nyctophobia (darkness), Odontophobia (dentists),
Glossophobia (speaking in public) Emetophobia (fear of being sick) Social
Phobia (fear of public interaction). The above Phobias are almost always indirect - this means that they are usually
indirectly linked to an unresolved emotional conflict. (All the other Phobias in this
'common phobia' section, are usually 'direct Phobias') I've grouped the phobias above
together, because they usually symbolise a situation where the sufferer feels 'out of
control'. If you think about it, there are very few situations in life that could
symbolise more a feeling of being 'out of control'...... ...flying in a tin can at 400
miles an hour, two miles up in the sky ...lying on a dentists couch, with him about to
stick a needle in you ...in a completely dark room, can't even see your own hand in front
of you ...caught up in a large crowd of people, being dragged along with them,
stuck in a trafic jam ......you
get the picture! SOCIAL PHOBIA
(SCOPOPHOBIA) - a fear of embarrassing, or humiliating on the spot'
type situations (in public).' SOCIAL PHOBIA is probably the most
common phobia there is; a pervasive fear of any situation where the sufferer is likely to
feel 'on the spot', embarrassed, humiliated or judged - for example; dinner parties,
public speaking, interviews, appearing in court etc. Associated symptoms: sensitivity to
criticism, negative self image, fear of rejection, difficulty in being assertive and
feelings of inferiority . On a more general level, the social
phobic worries continuously about how others 'see' them, and what others may think about
them - it is not surprising then that the sufferer usually spends a lot of time creating
the image they want others to see. Usually the social phobic is quite adept at concealing
their anxiety from others, although there is quite often a difficulty in maintaining eye
contact. In a clinical setting (in the
U.S.A.) somewhere between 3 and 13% of people had social phobia. Social phobia generally
starts in the mid -teens (although it often follows on from just being 'shy') or can be
triggered off by a particularly embarrassing event. As with all phobias, stress (or the
lack of it) will have a significant effect on the 'strength' of the anxiety created. In the D.S.M.4 (the Mental Health 'Bible') the main criteria for social phobia is listed as; A marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears that he/she will act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing.
FEAR OF BEING
SICK
(Emetophobia) Emetophobia
(sometimes known as emetephobia, phagaphobia or vimitaphobia) is an irrational
and intense fear of being sick. It is actually the sixth most common phobia in
the UK. Vomiting is not a pleasant experience for any of us but for somebody who
is unfortunate enough to suffer with emetophobia, even the idea of vomiting is
absolutely terrifying. Many sufferers find emetophobia totally governs their
lives. They are unable to eat out in restaurants or even eat socially at all.
They avoid any place or situation where there is the possibility of either
themselves or others being sick. The very thought or suggestion of being sick,
even the written word, can lead to panic and distress. Emetophobics
tend to identify vomiting with dirt and germs and can be obsessive about hygiene
and will also avoid places such as public toilets. Indeed many suffers may also
have trouble with other hygiene related problems. Those suffering with
emetophobia are often mistaken as having an eating disorder of some kind. This
is because they tend to eat very little and as we have mentioned, rarely in
public. Emetophobia is frequently
related to other fears such as choking, gagging, drowning, germs, hospitals and
social phobia. Some symptoms of emetophobia:
Phobias are removed by releasing the bottled up emotions which caused them using a special type of hypnotherapy called hypno-analysis. I have freed many clients from their phobias over the 9 years I have been in practice.
